As we approach the last few weeks of election, your last chance to get involved in this historic effort to get Trump out of office approaches.
“We know what’s at stake with this election,” says Jacinta González, Senior Campaign Organizer with Mijente who is leading the canvassing efforts. “And we know that doing this during the time of a pandemic can be incredibly risky. But we also know that the best way of speaking to our people is having face to face conversations.”
The good news is that there is way to do this safely, and there is still time for you to join Mijente’s existing efforts in Arizona and Florida--Phoenix and Miami specifically--to turn out voters in these crucial states. “What we’ve found a lot in the places we’ve been door knocking,” shares Jacinta, “is that this is the first time someone is talking to them about the election.”
There is a well-developed COVID safety plan in place, with lessons learned from this summer’s protests and from canvassing efforts in North Carolina and Georgia. “We know that if we are able to always wear masks and stay 6 ft apart,” explains Jacinta, “that allows everyone to keep each other collectively safe. That’s the same thing we’re doing with getting out the vote.”
To join, no experience is needed, you don’t need to be bilingual, you just need to have the ganas and some time to volunteer. Mijente also has travel and lodging scholarships available, so don’t let finances keep you from signing up. This coming weekend, there will be special caravanas in Miami and Phoenix, so this is a great weekend to join. But in reality, any day between now and election day, volunteers are needed on the streets.
